MONTPELIER COMMUNITY BUILDING PROPOSAL
Our goal is to build a recreation/community center on the corner of Main and Monroe Streets. The facility will have a full-size gymnasium, a stage, a fitness room, a classroom, a kitchen, and two restrooms. The property is close to downtown and adjacent to Montpelier Elementary and Middle Schools.
To do this we are in the process of applying for an OCRA Community Focus Fund (CFF) Grant for $500,000. We will submit our application in January 2009 and hope to start building by Summer 2009.
The group behind this project is called Montpelier Community Builders. Also, the Montpelier Kiwanis Club has pledged their help. We need to raise $179,000.
COMMUNITY NEED
- Montpelier and Blackford County have a lower than Indiana average education level. This fact shows in the county's lower than average income and also affects the county's efforts to bring in new employers.
- Obesity and poor health are common in our youth and adults.
- Montpelier does not have a fitness facility.
- Montpelier and Blackford County have a need for more recreation spae. During the winter months, court time is very difficult to get.
